25 To Life

Like a predictable music video
packed with bling-laden gangsters complaining about their hard life on the
street, 25 to Life is a parade of urban cliches. Whether it's the reluctant crim
who must defy the law in order to support his family or the hardened cop with a
score to settle, there's not one character or storyline here that isn't
well-trodden territory (and up to its knees in muddy third-person shooter
action).
With a barrage of obscenities and murderous gun play, 25 to Life
puts you in the shoes of law enforcers and ruthless and repulsive gang members.
Yet despite this mixture of perspectives, there's little deviation from the
common objective of shooting anyone and everyone who gets in your
way.
The linear level design churns out a string of dull locations
littered with health packs and weapons, your only challenge being to work your
way from one end to the next. If the artificial intelligence of your enemies was
realistic and the choice of weapons innovative, this conventional shoot-'em-up
action might have been bearable. However, mindless computer-controlled opponents
and a horrifically slippery targeting system has botched any chance of the
shoot-outs being a thrilling test of your skills.
The PS2 is now last
generation but we don't remember games looking this bad in the past. There's a
jagged and blocky look to much of the game, along with a flickering effect that
distorts what little detail there is.
If rhymes and heavy beats are your
bag, an impressive urban soundtrack featuring Xzibit, Public Enemy, KRS-One and
Tupac is about the only thing that's really going for this awful
game.
ENDGAME 25 to Life is public enemy No.1. Let's hope they lock it up
for good.
